Day 1: Gajendra's Prayer

Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

Kartik is the best, the purest of purifiers, and most glorious of all months. Any vrata, even the smallest, will yield huge results. During this month, it is recommended to hear Srimad Bhagavatam, daily in association of exalted Vaisnavas, if possible. It is most benificial to recite and read Gajendra Moksha Lila-stava from 8th canto of Srimad Bhagavatam, which teaches complete surrender/dependence on Supreme Lord.

  • Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, 8th Canto, 2nd chapter.

    śrī-śuka uvāca
    āsīd girivaro rājaṁs
    trikūṭa iti viśrutaḥ
    kṣīrodenāvṛtaḥ śrīmān
    yojanāyutam ucchritaḥ
    (Srimad Bhagavatam 8.2.1)

Śri Shukadeva Gosvami is narrating that Sri Hari appeared in Tāmasa manvantara(fourth manvantara) accepting Harimedha and Harini as parents and rescued formidable Gajendra, the leader of the wild elephants from the grip of a crocodile. Parīkṣit Maharaj wanted to hear this in detail and Shukadeva Gosvami is now narrating. You will find the narration in detail — about the mountain, about the trees etc. We may think all these are material things and how we shall be benefited by hearing this. Because in this region God has appeared so all these have been sanctified. So if you hear about this, it will increase your devotion. At the end of this topic of how Gajendra is rescued by Hari, the glories of hearing Gajendra moksha episode are described. There you will find that hearing about this scenery etc. is also Bhakti (devotion).

You have already heard that Trikūṭa is a great mountain. You will not find such a mountain now in this world. I think even hundreds of the worlds will enter into it. Length of the mountain is eighty thousand miles and if there be any cave in it, that cave will be equal to one continent of this world. There are many caves in that mountain. You cannot imagine. Trikūṭa mountain is surrounded by the Milk Ocean. Milk Ocean is so big that within that eighty thousand miles’ mountain is there. There are other mountains around this of the same size. Peaks of Trikūṭa mountain are iron peak, silver peak and gold peak. If you find such mountains anywhere in this world, there will be fight amongst all nations to get that. There are other gems and various kind of metals. Everything is rich. Worldly people will think that this is the wealth of an (entire) country or the world. Here [in Trikūṭa mountain] everything is there — all gems, very valuable gems and very valuable metals. There are other peaks which are also dazzling because of sun’s rays reflection on the silver and golden peaks. Due to reflection that place has become so dazzling. You have to imagine the beautiful scenery of that place. It is there in the commentary of Visvanatha Chakravarti Thakur. In the new edition(of Bhagavat) printed from our Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, there is Bengali translation of Sanskrit commentary of Visvanatha Chakravarti Pada so it will be easy for our understanding.

You can find this mountain’s name is Trikūṭa because there are 3 peaks, ‘Tri’ means 3 and ‘kūṭa’ means peak — of iron, of silver, and of gold. There are other peaks and when sun rises that light reflects from the silver and golden peaks and that [reflected light] comes through other mountains so it becomes so dazzling. You imagine. There are big waterfalls, springs and their sound can be heard. The scenery, landscape of that place is so nice. Emerald is one gem is like green colour. The bottom/foot of the Trikūṭa mountain are washed from all the sides by the milk ocean. Color of it’s water is white like milk. All the eight sides [north, south, east, west and the directions midway between them] of the mountain there are emerald gold (marakatā mani), very costly stone/gem. There also reflection comes and the whole area of the big mountain and the bottom portion where there are grasses etc. become so attractive and everything else become green color. So you have to imagine what sort of mountain is that.

    siddha-cāraṇa-gandharvair
    vidyādhara-mahoragaiḥ
    kinnarair apsarobhiś ca
    krīḍadbhir juṣṭa-kandaraḥ
    (SB 8.2.5)

So many big caves and in one cave there are many big serpents. In one cave there are the Kinnaras. There are various sects of demigods remaining(staying) there and that cave is not so small. One cave may be more than the area of Europe. All demigods are residing and there are also serpents and also Apsarā — beautiful nymphs of paradise are residing there. This mountain is equal to a world, more than a world like earth. In this world you will get 7 continents and in this mountain there are so many caves, each more than the area of a continent. It is better to think about this only to imagine about this. If you go practically there then you will be devoured by the pythons. You will be killed by the lions. They are very big caves in which big lions are present and they are making roaring sound and that roaring sound is resounding. Because of the resounding the lions are thinking there are some other lions roaring and frightening us which makes them very angry. Lions think that if you [other lions] think you are powerful than I am more powerful and they will make greater sound. That area is full of sound and resounding of the powerful lions. Then you think about that area! Other demigods, they are of different groups, they are also singing and their singing is sweet. That sound is also coming.
